How to Build an A-Frame House

a frame house framing

Wood framing (lumber) costs range between $1 and $5 per square foot. The material costs of steel are cheaper, with average prices between $2 and $4 per square foot, but the installation is more expensive, making it a more costly option. With the wall up in position, drive 2-by-4 stakes in the ground and provide temporary supports anchored to the wall studs and stakes. Duplex nails used for constructing foundations are good for this step, as they can more easily be pulled later.

Be sure to check with your local building department for information. If your local code differs from anything shown in this book, build according to your area’s requirements. The IRC is a model code, a template that states can adopt in whole or in part. But even if a state adopts the IRC, local jurisdictions generally amend it to fit their specific conditions (see “Codes for Special Locations” on the facing page).

Step 21 – Install the Roof Shingles

And the other two blocks in the middle of the roof truss (that’s 96″ from the bottom of the roof). These middle bridging blocks will be used for plywood attachment and to prevent the plywood from sagging. Another advantage of a tiny A-frame is that they are relatively easy to construct. If you have some basic carpentry skills, then you should be able to build one on your own. However, if you’re not sure about your abilities, then it’s always a good idea to hire a professional contractor to help you out. Either way, building an tiny house is a fun and rewarding project that anyone can enjoy.

A town in a particularly hazardous fire zone, for example, might decide to make local codes more stringent than the IRC regarding acceptable roofing products. The layer of plywood or OSB that skins the exterior of the wall is called wall sheathing. It adds lateral strength to the wall system by tying the framing members together.

Douglas fir’s strength, durability and comparatively low price make it one of the most popular options. Do not frame the flooring until the house’s concrete foundation has set. Before the framing process can get started, your home’s foundation must be poured.

Construction Features

To get an accurate estimate, it’s best to consult with a professional framing contractor. The material cost to frame a house is $4 to $17 per square foot, depending on if you use wood or metal. Wood framing materials cost less, but steel framing is more durable. The average labor cost for framing is $7 to $13 per square foot, depending on the house size, design, and foundation type. Labor costs are on the higher end of the range to frame a house with a crawl space, basement, or second story.

Step 17 – Cover Roof with Plywood

Next, fill the bottom 6″ of the holes with small rocks (rock size 1″-2″). It’s important to have a wood foundation at least 6″ above ground for ventilation to prevent wood rot. One of the great things about A-Frame cabins is that they are extremely versatile. You can use them as a primary residence, vacation home, or even a rental property.

plans found!

Lightweight steel framing is also becoming increasingly common, because it is durable, uniform in shape and resistant to fire and moisture. Drawbacks to steel frames are higher cost and poor insulation properties. Aside from the parts of the house framing we’ve mentioned above, there are quite a few terms that you should learn before beginning a wall framing project of your own. During the wall construction, you should add openings for windows and doors, including window sills and headers.

Next, build the batter boards for the string lines to establish a more accurate foundation layout. Then pull and adjust the strings to the exact dimensions following the cabin plans. Ayfraym offers a handful of designs available for purchase as plans for under $7,000, or as established kits ready for building around $179,000.

The size of the project significantly impacts the cost of installation. Some professionals charge per square foot rather than the amount of time a project takes. Regardless, bigger homes take longer and require more materials. The more complex your building plans, the more you can expect to pay for house framing. Every intersecting wall requires more studs, increasing your material costs.

This measurement may be on 16- or 24-inch centers, depending on building design or local codes. Wood framing — also called stick framing and timber framing — consists of construction lumber that is nailed together and mounted to the foundation. Most wall studs and frames around door and window openings are made of 2x4s, while rafters, joists, and sill plates are usually made out of wider material, like 2x10s and 2x12s. Other parts of wood framing include roof sheathing, subfloor, and more. Roof framing costs $6 to $15 per square foot installed on average, including labor and materials. The cost to frame a roof depends on the size, pitch, and design.

It’s important to note that agents only get paid when they sell your work. The common relationship for an author and agent is that an agent will take a set percentage of the deal sales in exchange for their work earning the book deal and negotiating on your behalf.

How Much Cruise Lines Spend on Food (Less Than You Think?)

Read on for our Port of Miami breakdown, including address information, cruise line terminals, directions, services and more. Also, be sure to check out Cruise Critic's ranked cruise deals from Port of Miami and see what tips, tricks and secret advice our Cruise Critic members have to say about cruises from Port of Miami. Port Miami has 11 cruise terminals although several are currently under construction. Designed to accommodate smaller boutique vessels and more exclusive luxury cruise ships, Terminal J is operated by Oceania and Regent Seven Seas. It is one of 3 terminals dedicated to Carnival which is currently Miami’s top customer, welcoming over 2 million passengers a year. Ft. including a VIP lounge, advanced security screening, check-in counters, and conveyor baggage system.

Independent van/car services

Official Port ParkingThe Port of Miami offers parking garages and lots near all of the cruise terminals. In total there are thousands of parking spaces — you don’t need to reserve a space or worry about finding a spot. Uber/LyftIf you fly in for your cruise — or simply don’t want to deal with driving — then Uber and Lyft offer service throughout South Florida to the Miami cruise port (including the airports). Getting a ride at any time you want is as simple as opening the app and requesting a ride at your location. Estimated rates from points of interest are below and will vary based on traffic. While that means you’ll have to deal with South Florida traffic, it is a convenient way to get to your ship.

The Tunnel doesn’t have access if driving from South Beach and you will have to Exit on Biscayne Boulevard (Exit 2) and make a U-turn on N. Alternatively, just drive Downtown and follow the Port of Miami signs to cross the Port Bridge. Freedom TowerThe Freedom Tower is perhaps Miami’s most famous building.

The great news about being in a tourist hotspot like Miami is that there’s an entire industry catering to tourists and cruise passengers to help you with anything you need. That means you have an number of transportation options to get to the port. If you’re not picky, however, you can save some cash by staying at hotels nearer the airport or elsewhere around the city. These hotels don’t have the “flash” of a swanky downtown Miami or South Beach hotel, but offer a comfortable place to stay for cheaper. When you cruise, it’s usually a good idea to arrive to the port city the day before your trip.

Plans include widening the ship channel and the turning basin which will include the acquisition of land rights currently used by Seaboard Marine. Terminal G is a Miami landmark with its iconic sail-like roofline. It currently serves Royal Caribbean International (RCI) and Celebrity Cruises among others. It was completed in 2013 at a relatively moderate cost of $2 million. The 3-story facility has a VIP lounge, advanced security screening, check-in counters, and conveyor baggage system. Part of it has been incorporated into the new Terminal B construction.

PortMiami Cruise Terminal Information

Head up to the roof to get a dramatic sweeping view of the entire port area in the thoughtfully-designed open-air wildlife exhibit. In late-October 2019 was approved the agreement for Brightline Miami to be rebranded "Virgin Trains" and Virgin Group to build a train station (Virgin Trains PortMiami) at the cruise port. The new station serves high-speed trains and connects PortMiami directly with the USA's intercity railway system and Orlando International Airport. Construction works on Virgin Trains PortMiami are scheduled for completion in 2022.

From the Airport:

For those flying to South Florida to embark a cruise ship in Miami on the same day, traveling to the port is very straight forward regardless of the arrival airport - Miami or Fort Lauderdale. The Port of Miami is on a man-made island (know as Dodge Island) between Downtown Miami and South Beach. With around 5 million passengers per year, Miami is the busiest cruise port in the World. As a perk, some hotels in Miami offer parking deals while you cruise in exchange for a night’s stay.

There’s a good chance you’ll sail from Terminal J. The cruise terminal is on the southern side of the island, opposite of the rest of the cruise port traffic. Its location with no other ships around make getting to your cruise a bit less hectic than some of the busier terminals. As you would expect given the number of cruises that leave Miami, it has the capacity to dock a number of cruise ships as once. In fact, with a total of eight terminals (with several more on the way), more than a half-dozen ships can be berthed at any given time. Below we’ve listed current terminal and those under construction or soon to be built.

PortMiami is in close proximity to many desirable neighborhoods so there's no lack of opportunity to find both destination dining and good local eats. Your choice will also depend on how long you're staying, what you'd like to see while you're in town and how many hotel points you have to spend. Royal Caribbean's Terminal A Garage charges a higher rate of $35 per day. In general, you’ll find the summers are hot, oppressive, wet, and mostly cloudy while the winters are short, comfortable, humid, windy, and mostly clear.

How long does it take to get to the airport from the Port of Miami? We mentioned it above, but it takes about minutes in normal traffic to get to the Miami airport from the cruise port. Expect 45 minutes to one hour if you are headed to Fort Lauderdale. While navigating around the port can be a little confusing given the twists and turns and the number of terminals, picking up and dropping off is simple. You’ll see signs at the terminal directing you to the spot where you can let out passengers (and pick them up afterward). Simply pull up and drop them off, similar to what you would do at an airport.

By the agreement, NCLH received preferential berthing rights at the new Terminal B. This means priority docking of vessels from the fleets of NCL, Oceania and RSSC-Regent. The required minimum number of ship calls (per fiscal year) is 45, which is 15 more than the previous agreement. Royal Caribbean is leasing the land for an initial 20-year period (until 2048) at base rent US$9,5 million per year (annual increase 1,5%). In addition to the base rent, Miami-Dade County receives US$5,50 per cruise passenger in excess of 1,55 million pax. The plans for the new Royal Caribbean terminal were approved by Miami's Board of County Commissioners on July 7, 2016. Under the agreement, RCCL fully financed the construction, except US$15M that PortMiami paid for infrastructure/road works.

We did a bit of souvenir shopping and even stopped by Margaritaville for a drink before catching a taxi to the white sands of 7-mile beach. There was four of us so we found a minivan taxi and got quoted $20 total for the one-way trip. Unfortunately, we got dropped off at a beach club that required us to pay another $2-3 per person to enter. There was a restaurant and a stretch of beach with lots of lounge chairs but it was very crowded and not what we were looking for. We paid our admission fee and made our way down the beach toward a more deserted stretch of sand (there were still quite a few people). After departing Montego Bay, the ship sails the Caribbean and Panama Canal for two days before making its next stop at ColΓ³n, Panama, for an optional visit to Indigenous villages or a walk around the colorful city.

Night Panama Canal CruiseDetails

Cozumel is the first stop; the island's coral reef is ideal for snorkeling and diving, while deep-sea fishing is also an option. If you prefer to stay on dry land, you can ferry to Playa del Carmen and Tulum, shop for local-made souvenirs, or dine on fresh seafood and Mexican specialties. This cruise aboard the Carnival Sunrise departs from Miami for a day at sea before arriving in Grand Cayman. After leaving the Cayman Islands, the ship moves on to Ocho Rios, Jamaica, where excursions include swimming with dolphins, river tubing, zip lining, and horseback riding along the shore. Explore the nearby Gibb's Cay and swim with stingrays, discover the vibrant history of the island from 700 A.D. Consider taking a tour of the Kennedy Space Center before boarding the Disney Fantasy in Cape Canaveral.

Cruise visits to the islands are approaching 30 million each year, and cruise lines are adding new destinations to their itineraries all the time. Ships from Disney Cruise Line, Holland America, MSC, and Princess cruises are also scheduled. Following Cayman Island’s government decision to lift the ban on cruise ships, a total of 21 ships will visit from Monday, 21 March, through April 17.

Night Caribbean - Western CruiseDetails

From there, the ship spends another day at sea, one day in RoatΓ‘n, Honduras, and then a final day at sea en route back to Ocean Cay. Following one more day of MSC guests-only fun, the ship returns to Miami the next morning for disembarkation. Travel from Panama City to Miami on Oceania Cruises' Sirena, stopping along the South American coast along the way. The first stop after a day of sailing through the Panama Canal is Cartagena, Colombia, where cruise-goers can hop off the ship to see mansions and a historic fort. The best Jamaica cruises will let you explore adventure-packed experiences.

We offer staterooms ranging from interior cabins to full suites, and we even offer connected rooms for families with more than four members traveling together. The history of Batabano dates back to the late 1980s when a group of locals aimed to create a festival that would celebrate the diverse cultural heritage of the Cayman Islands. The term "Batabano" is derived from the tracks left by the turtles as they crawl onto the beach to nest—a significant event in Caymanian culture.

Go Stargazing under the stunning expanse of the night sky with Discovery at SEA, compete in a family game night, and savor the flavors of the islands together. Throughout your cruise to the Caribbean there will be events that excite, enrich and challenge you to fully experience the islands. The Cayman Islands Carnival, also known as "Batabano," is an annual celebration deeply rooted in the local culture. This colorful and lively event typically takes place in late April or early May, attracting both locals and visitors. The festival spans several days filled with vibrant parades, energetic music, dance performances, and elaborate costumes that reflect the rich heritage of the islands.

Norwegian Cruise Line Ships and Itineraries 2024, 2025, 2026

Don't be surprised if you see people in shorts in the main dining rooms. Norwegian Sun is also one of the smallest and least kid-focused of the five ships the line deploys to Alaska in summer, making it a good choice for retirees wanting to visit that destination. Families with kids naturally gravitate to the two giant, activity-packed vessels Norwegian sends to Alaska each summer — Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Bliss.

LIMITED-TIME ONLINE OFFER!

The biggest two of them, on Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima, are nearly 1,400 feet long and sprawl over three decks. Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Epic, for instance, have the Cavern Club, a reproduction of the British club that gave rise to the Beatles. It comes complete with a cover band that plays the group's greatest hits. In some cases, the Broadway shows are cut down slightly from the original versions, and the casts aren't quite as seasoned as what you'll find on Broadway.

South Pacific Cruises

Serving a wide variety of culinary delights to please every palate, our complimentary dining options include three main dining rooms, a help-yourself buffet and a variety of casual cafΓ©s, grills and on-the-go choices. Plus, our Main Dining Rooms offer a menu that changes daily, Chef's Signature Dishes and carefully selected wine recommendations, guaranteeing a different culinary adventure with every visit. Specifically designed and priced for solo travelers, our Studios feature a full-size bed, separate bath area and access to the private Studio Lounge — no single supplement required.

The seafood is fresh, the sun is shining and there’s a whole lot to do, so get out there and explore the city before, during and after your cruise from Port Canaveral, Florida. Norwegian ships also typically hold several themed nights (glow party, '70s or '80s, etc.) during a typical sailing.

In addition, Norwegian Encore has a large laser tag area on its top deck (one that I can tell you from personal experience is a blast) and a massive indoor gaming and virtual reality zone called the Galaxy Pavilion. For starters, Norwegian Encore is home to some of the most thrilling waterslides at sea, as well as a kiddie splash zone that will have your little ones squealing with delight. But those are just the appetizers when it comes to family fun on the top deck of the ship. When it comes to the entertainment on our newest ships, you won’t believe your eyes or even your ears. Bask in the bright lights of Broadway with performances like Million Dollar Quartet.

Grab a burger and beer anytime you like at O’Sheehan’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill. Whether you’re looking to meet up with friends or make new ones, there’s always an opportunity to mix it up. Find your inner foodie at Ocean Blue featuring delicious seafood eats. Bring a hearty appetite to our Brazilian steakhouse, Moderno Churrascaria. Whether you’re dining inside or oceanside on The Waterfront, our specialty restaurants feature the tastes you’ll crave.

There are no formal nights, as you'll still find on Royal Caribbean ships, or dress codes. Norwegian has also thoroughly done away with the concept of big main restaurants with fixed seating. Pride of America notably operates with a mostly U.S. crew, in keeping with regulations governing cruise itineraries that only include U.S. ports. Instead of a few big main restaurants with fixed seating times, Norwegian ships offer a wide range of eateries and no assigned seating times — just make a reservation.

Norwegian doesn't have any formal nights, but there is an optional Norwegian's Night Out at least once per sailing, for which passengers are encouraged to dress up. You'll rarely see a tux or gown, but suits and cocktail dresses are not unheard of. The sailings in and out of Buenos Aires and Melbourne, all on the longer side, will offer in-depth explorations of the southern half of South America (Argentina, Uruguay and Chile) and New Zealand, respectively. For older travelers looking for a Norwegian ship that isn't filled to the gills with children, Norwegian Sun is the perfect option. A bigger caveat, perhaps, is that these solo cabins have become so popular they often sell out far in advance and at prices that aren't much better than booking a cabin for two.

The first two Breakaway-class ships entered service in 2013 and 2014 as Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway. On October 17, 2012, Meyer Werft and Norwegian reached a second agreement for the construction of two new vessels,[36] slated for delivery in October 2015 and 2017, respectively. The project was under the code name "Breakaway Plus Class", with the vessels expected to be 163,000 gross tons and hold 4,200 passengers. Savor Freestyle dining aboard Norwegian Cruise Line, including the specialty restaurants like Ocean Blue, Cagney's, Le Bistro, Moderno Churrascaria, The Haven Restaurant, the main dining rooms and several pubs, bars, grills and cafes. At 78,309 tons, Norwegian Sun is less than half the size of the biggest Norwegian ships, and it holds just 1,878 passengers at double occupancy. (Compare that to more than 4,000 for Norwegian's biggest vessels.) Expect a far more intimate experience than what you'll find on most of the ships mentioned above.

Beginning March 20, 2022, Jewel is the first NCL ship to offer roundtrip Panama Canal sailings from Panama City (Colon and Fuerte Amador). (2023) from Miami are offered 5- to 9-day roundtrips to the Eastern and Western Caribbean. The Caribbean deployment is based on 7-day roundtrips from Port Canaveral to Puerto Plata (Dominicana), Road Town (Tortola BVI), Charlotte Amalie (St Thomas USVI) and Great Stirrup Cay Bahamas.

(December 2022 and March 2023) NCL Prima from Port Canaveral offers day roundtrips to Western Caribbean. Norwegian Prima is a newbuild (2022) ship with Maiden Voyage currently scheduled for August 17, 2022. The inaugural season in Northern Europe (August 17 through September 13, 2022) includes 10-day Baltic itineraries leaving from Amsterdam and Copenhagen. In October 2025, the ship starts an Eastern Caribbean program with 5- and 7-day roundtrips from Miami. Final payments for holiday sailings (Christmas and New Year) are now due 120 days prior to departure dates, only excluding Norwegian Sky.

The policy also includes the private islands Great Stirrup Cay (Bahamas) and Harvest Caye (Belize). In 2017, NCLH had worldwide cruise market share 9,5% (passengers) and 12,8% (revenue). NCLH (shipowner) owns and manages the fleets of three subsidiary companies/sister-brands - NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania and RSSC-Regent Seven Seas.
